Social and Recreation Services
Workers in the social services professions help the homeless, counsel the troubled, retrain the unemployed, and offer support services to children and the elderly. Social workers are employed in government agencies, residential care facilities, job training centers, community food banks and kitchens, and non-profit organizations such as the American Red Cross. Social service workers usually have some college coursework in human services or social work or a 4-year college degree. Social workers usually need a master's degree and/or other professional certification. Workers in the recreational industry are employed in the travel industry, health and fitness clubs, commercial sports and outdoor facilities, and golf courses. Some jobs are seasonal and part-time.
